Description
The word "tribulation" is from the Latin word "tribulum," which means "threshing sledge". A tribulum is a farming instrument still used in many third word countries today. A tribulum is a large wooden sled covered with flint stones. It is hitched to an oxen or horse and pulled over wheat to separate the chaff. This Tribulum (or "Tribillium") is most likely French and quite old. We purchased it 20 years ago from St. Helena St. Helena Antiques in St. Helena, Ca. I called the owner of the antique store recently and he estimated the value of this piece to be $4,000. It is 47" wide 75" high, roughly 8" deep and weighs 175 lbs. We hung this beautiful piece on our living room wall with accent lighting. The photos do not do the piece justice and the detail of the flint pieces is magnificent as they are wedged into the hardwood knots. " Looks African, what is it??????"... great conversation piece and a stunning antique/piece of art. May be picked up at our home on Bainbridge Island, Wa. or it can be crated and shipped at your expense.
