Description
This is a wonderful early Victorian antique childs sampler worked by Margaret Atkinson aged 11 and dated 1842. Sampler = 18 inches x 18 inches - plus frame. This sampler is in fantastic condition with no holes or stains or stitch loss, the sampler has never been washed and retains a nice aged "wheat"colour with good strong colours to the stitching. The sturdy oak frame seems to be the original and is also in great condition being simple in design and complete with original gilt slip and old float glass. The work displays Adam and Eve beside the tree of life with various animals, birds , plants and trees, it displays the marriage names of Harrson Atkinson plus numerous family initials. The sampler is fully signed to the centre Margaret Atkinson aged 11  -  1842.  There is a verse within a floral border that reads =  God what a great and aw-ful word O who can speak his worth By saints in heav`n he is ador`d A nd fear`d by men on earth And yet a little child may bend And say my father and my friend.   "By this you see ,what care my dear parents"...........  (This line would normally finish) " took of me " ( but 11 year old Margaret had obviously run out of space to finish the line.  There is the alphabet in large and small letters plus the numerals 1 - 10, there are various rows of sample stitching containing hearts and flowers, and the whole thing is finished off to all four edges with a very impressive Strawberry border. All in all an extremely nice antique that displays very well indeed. Please note = I struggled a bit with pics because the sampler is behind glass and some of the images dont quite do this piece justice. I would say picture 1 is probably the most true to life. Any viewing welcome. This item would be best left glazed and picked up in person or by a trustworthy courier, but the glass would have to be removed for shipping/posting Overseas bidders Paypal only please. This listing has a low start price and realistic reserve. Any questions - e mail or ring 07917385776
