Description
13Th Century Song Dynasty Tea Dust Glaze Tea Bowl 'Tea dust glazed' bowls, such as this one, found great popularity at tea competitions and tea ceremonies ("cha-no-yu"), and were preferred  because they showed their most prized white tea to its best advantage.  Tea Dust Glaze bowls are much like the Hare's Fur bowls, but are considered much more rare.  This tea bowl dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty, making it an  approximately 13Th Century Artifact.  It is an  exquisite bowl, in perfect museum-quality condition, displaying the shine typical of the Song period glazes, and a perfect under-firing that causes the normally black glaze to form its Tea Dust color.  As a 'cache' item, and not funeral in nature, it still shows under microscopic conditions the effects of long term burial. However, this exquisite piece displays very little original usage and had to have buried at a very early age when the Mongols were starting to overrun China. This magnificent example is one of the finest we have ever seen, in person or in publication. It is perfection personified for the period. The true color of the glaze is a much more yellow-green than the pictures show. In our opinion, no matter what top gallery you would shop, in any city in the world, you will not find a better tea glaze bowl at any price.  The bowl is in-situ condition, with no damage or repairs of any kind.  The tea bowl is 4-1/2" in diameter and 1-5/8" deep.  Please Note: No acid etching, salt etching, or mud fired into the glaze as you will find on the newest reproductions. Please Note: At the end of this listing this item will move to antiquitiesplus.com.  This piece came to us from the Mr & Mrs. Andrew Mullen collection.   Mr. & Mrs. Mullen are third generation collectors of exquisite art objects.  Note: This collection should not be taken lightly. It is substantial, and comes from an old money estate. Note: Figure 18, page 115 - Hare's Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers -Robert D. In addition to my own inspection, this bowl has also been authenticated by Dr. Timothy Jones, PhD, Anthropologist, formerly with the University of Arizona.  Dr. Jones has accepted invitations to the world's largest museum in Beijing, and has received privately guided tours of the Beijing Museum, which included some of the most treasured vault items hidden away from the general public.  Dr. Jones has directed the excavations and analyses of more than 20 major sites and 40 archaeological surveys.  Dr. Jones now runs his own appraisal and authentication business, and is certified RPA-IAA.  Dr. Jones can be reached at 520-744-2766.  He helps in the verifications of all our later porcelains, as I do for him on the older items of Jades and pottery.  He has no vested interest in our business and we just truly enjoy each others company and knowledge.   This item has also been authenticated by Mr. Fred Gumbart, owner/appraiser of Arizona Galleries (520-322-6388).  He specializes (by appointment only) in consultations and official, licensed, and accredited appraisals of Fine Period Antiques, Fine Art, Ethnographic Art, Pre-Columbian Art and the Asian Arts.  Fred is a lifelong collector of artifacts, and has the most astounding memory of anyone I have personally known.   You may view this item or any of our other antiquities, fine art or artifacts at our gallery, by appointment only.
