Description
Shaar Hagolan Mortar Neolithic 5000BC When the members of Kibbutz Shaar Hagolan dug fishponds in their fields in 1943, they uncovered a prehistoric site. Partially excavated from 1948 to 1962, under the direction of M. Stekelis of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the unique culture found there became known as the Yarmukian, or Shaar Hagolan Culture. New excavations, since 1989, uncovered impressive remains of a neolithic village, dating to 5,500 - 5000BC. This stone mortar, made of a hard, dense sandstone, was from a 1962 dig, and came from the old Tucson Estate collection of Mr. Eugene B. Thomas. Mr. Thomas was an avid amateur archeologist, and most of his collection is comprised of personal finds. He was also very detailed in his documentation, even labeling sifted shards and fragments. This mortar still has the dig notation penned on the rim SHAR HAGOLAN 1961. To view other items from this amazing, wonderful, and diversified collection, please view our other listings in the weeks to come. Slightly oval this mortar is 2-3/4" by 2-1/4" and 1-1/2" high. In addition to my own inspection, this mortar has also been authenticated by Dr. Timothy Jones, PhD, Anthropologist, formerly with the University of Arizona. Dr. Jones has accepted invitations to the world's largest museum in Beijing, and has received privately guided tours of the Beijing Museum, which included some of the most treasured vault items hidden away from the general public. Dr. Jones has directed the excavations and analyses of more than 20 major sites and 40 archaeological surveys. Dr. Jones now runs his own appraisal and authentication business, and is certified RPA-IAA. Dr. Jones can be reached at 520-744-2766. He helps in the verifications of all our later porcelains, as I do for him on the older items of Jades and pottery. He has no vested interest in our business and we just truly enjoy each others company and knowledge. You may view this item or any of our other antiquities, fine art or artifacts at our gallery, by appointment only. We are Antiquities, Plus...
