Description
An interesting Schoolwork sampler by SARAH HILLMAN from PELHAM STREET School 1876. In many ways a marking sampler as it is worked in cream on white , as required when marking house hold linens etc. The sampler has both upper and lower case letters as well as numbers 1 to 10. As the sampler records Sarah was 11 years old when she completed her sampler. Pelham Street School is still open teaching the children of Hove & Brighton on the south coast. Sarah was born in 1863 in Brighton, the oldest daughter of James and Ann Hillman. By 1881 she had moved with her little sister Ann & brother Franck with their parents to 65 Weedingh Road Middlesex. Were her father had a Gilding workshop employing one lad. Framed in newish maple frame measuring 11 x 13 inches, 28 x 33 cm. Age related marks, possibly faded colour.
