Throughout history, these handmade rugs have been the object of fascination, desire, and status. CatalinaRug.com's mission is to help bring this rich cultural legacy to your home - at a affordable price! Browse our history of area rugs to learn all about the history of Oriental rugs and the weaving methods used to create them. Evidence suggests that thousands of years ago, nomadic tribesmen between Eurasia and Mongolia were the first to create pile carpets. These carpets were woven to add warmth and comfort to their simple tent homes. As more and more tribes mastered the technique of weaving pile rugs, it became a common practice to incorporated their creativity into the designs transforming a trade skill into works of art. Area rugs became not just a functional neccessity in thier tent homes but a symbol of taste and refinement by adding personality and beauty to their sparse surroundings. Today's rug designs are more sophisticated, but they serve much the same purpose, lending beauty, warmth and personality to enhance a home. When considering a rug for your home, there are a number of reasons why you might decide upon hand knotted Oriental rugs or handmade Persian rugs instead of machine-made ones. Quality is the most important consideration. Handmade rugs are much more durable than mass-produced machine made rugs. Handmade rugs are usually made with natural materials such as cotton, wool or silk. These natural fibers last longer and release no harmful gasses into the environment over time. And since each rug is hand-knotted, each strand has been tied individually for greater combined strength and consistency Characteristic The town of Nain is located at the western edge of the desert ninty miles east of Isfahan. The rugs from here are among the finest woven in Iran, Which is a weave that is comparable to the most excellent of the antique carpets. The making of hand-knotted rugs in Nain began only in the 1930’s. The city of Nain for many generations produced a fine quality of hand-made wool cloth, which was used by Persians to make their fine clothes. But when Persians began to wear European clothes the cloth industry was diminished, so the people in Nain turned to rug weaving just before World War II. Most Nain rugs are woven with cotton warp and weft threads and a fine quality of wool for the pile. Silk is often used to accentuate designs and motifs. The quality of Nain rug weaving varies and as can be expected the price vary with the quality of the rug. The knots in Nain rug contain some 250-500 knots or more to the square inch. The design follows the old famous Isfahan with a general use of Shah Abbas design and finely drawn flowers, foliages and vines. The border is on a cream field, with a classical old design, which features the Shah Abbas. Most of these general designs are within the field of ivory. The Nain border is often cream, red, and blue. The color palette used in Nain rugs is limited to a dark indigo blue, medium blue, beige and shades of brown that are the colors most commonly used. White silk is used to accentuate certain designs and motifs. The background color of Nain rugs is usually blue or beige and less frequently red.
