Throughout history, these handmade rugs have been the object of fascination, desire, and status. CatalinaRug.com's mission is to help bring this rich cultural legacy to your home - at a affordable price! Browse our history of area rugs to learn all about the history of Oriental rugs and the weaving methods used to create them. Evidence suggests that thousands of years ago, nomadic tribesmen between Eurasia and Mongolia were the first to create pile carpets. These carpets were woven to add warmth and comfort to their simple tent homes. As more and more tribes mastered the technique of weaving pile rugs, it became a common practice to incorporated their creativity into the designs transforming a trade skill into works of art. Area rugs became not just a functional neccessity in thier tent homes but a symbol of taste and refinement by adding personality and beauty to their sparse surroundings. Today's rug designs are more sophisticated, but they serve much the same purpose, lending beauty, warmth and personality to enhance a home. When considering a rug for your home, there are a number of reasons why you might decide upon hand knotted Oriental rugs or handmade Persian rugs instead of machine-made ones. Quality is the most important consideration. Handmade rugs are much more durable than mass-produced machine made rugs. Handmade rugs are usually made with natural materials such as cotton, wool or silk. These natural fibers last longer and release no harmful gasses into the environment over time. And since each rug is hand-knotted, each strand has been tied individually for greater combined strength and consistency  Characteristic The Small town of Bijar is located northwest of Iran. The rugs are woven in Bijar and numerous surrounding villages. Some of the oldest and finest Bijar rugs were woven by Kurdish weavers in the village of Halvai; other finely woven Bijar rugs are woven in and around the town of Tekab by Afshars who have settled there. A combination of the Herati and medallion designs is the most frequently used pattern in Bijar rugs. A lozenge-Shaped medallion is superimposed on a field filled with the repeated Herati motif on occasion the central medallion and spandrels are filled. Another design frequently used consists of a central medallion on a field with roses, vines, and leaves. The roses are repeated in the main border. One of the structural features characteristics of Bijar rug is the thickness of the rug. Two or three weft threads are used in weaving the rug one has to be thick and either one or two has to be thin. These wefts are very lightly packed together, which causes a severe depression of the warp threads. As a result, Bijars have a very dense and tight weave and wear extremely well. The complementary colors are also dullish wine-red, rust, dark blue mauve, and ivory back-ground. Bijar rugs are woven in a variety of sizes, from small mats to large gallery sizes. Runners of varying lengths are also woven. What excites us about the best Bijar carpets is that this originality is coupled with the highest technical quality for all their lack of elegance and manufactory perfection. They are seen again and again in prime positions in Oriental rug exhibitions because they combine all the qualities that we prize in this field of art: practically indestructible construction magnificent colors, fine weave, unpredictable and deeply expressive independence of design.
