Description
Rare Trihedral Handaxe, Paleolithic, Lower Acheulian   DescriptionType: trihedral handaxe, 1 ¼ sided specimen on pebblePaleolithic Period, Industry: Lower Paleolithic, Lower Acheulian Dating: in Europe dated ca. 800 to 400 ka (the site of Atapuerca/ northern Spain, is up to today the oldest well dated European site where hominids were found. It is dated ca. 800 ka. Recent finds in Great Britain, ca. 700 ka, confirm the conquest of the European continent and British Isles to have been much earlier than many archaeologists assumed, and it most probably will only be a question of time until well to date finds older than 1 Mio years will be unearthed)Description: Size: length 17,0 cm, width 10,8 cm, thickness 6,6 cm, weight 1140 grams Shape, Retouch: we have been listing two handaxes of ver different shape: this one is a heavy sturdy specimen, made on an angular pebble (certainly deliberately selected by the Homo Erectus toolmaker) with a natural edge at the cortical back. Thus the overall impression is one of a trihedron. Important working edge on a trihedron is the triangular tip, which is much more sturdy than a flat one. The tip on this specimen here is deliberately trimmed not only on the entirely retouched face, but also on the right part of the otherwise cortical back. One face of the tool is entirely retouched, flaking is rather broad, some flake scars end in hinges. Both long edges exhibit some finer flaking. The butt is flat and presents the last retouch made on this tool, it is well visible that the flaking cut some flake scars of the facial retouch. Pictures 1 to 4 show the entire tool, turned clockwise, the other pictures present details Raw-material: a pebble out of gray quartzite, the most common raw-material on the Garonne terraces Preservation: very well: the surface is somewhat weathered, but flake scars are still well defined. One small flat modern abrasion at the tip of the retouched face, and as flat abrasion at the other face of the tip, and one small modern scar at the cortical left edge. These minor modern damages do in no way detract from the value of this rare trihedron. Additional Information, Literature: The pebble tools found on the high gravel terraces of the Garonne, Tarn and Aveyron river are among the earliest tools found in Europe.
