Description
Happy Holidays, now through Christmas all my auctions will feature Free USPS Priority Mail or 1st Class Mail in the USA. Insurance is optional on most auctions. This auction requires insurance which is additional. Up for auction today is an odd little manuscript dated 1902. I have not been able to locate any information on it anywhere. Book is filled with tidbits on the life of Elbert Hubbard, quotes, Monastic creed with which to live by, Roycroft, Message to Garcia, references of the Philistine and much more in the 144 pages. Front cover: Elbert Hubbard: his creed and some other things. Being A Pleasant Penance. 1902 Title Page: Elbert Hubbard: his creed and some other things. With an Invocatory by the Brother Eusebius. Printed for once (in a while) at the Monastery at Le Trap, at Charlestown (which is in the Commowealth of Mass.), By some few of The Grey Brothers of the Order. Someone has drawn a circle with a 5/9 in green ink at the bottom of this page. Next Page has picture of Elbert Hubbard, Invocatory by the Brother Petronius. Some of the interesting remarks: The Grey Brothers of the Le Trap in Charlestown is but a small branch of a Great Order numbering nearly one hundred thousand lay brothers, with a proper prepartion of those in authority over them to carefully conduct internal affairs of their several Monasteries. We at our branch at the Order have viewed with alarm the so-called Progress in the Art of Printing and Book Making in the world outside. We so deprecate the "the advancement and deplore its effect upon humanity that we have issued this little book to voice our sentiments on this head and likewise to bring tribute to The Man who, single handed, has endeavored to bring to the people a knowledge of what a book should be. The type with which this volume was printed was specially made for this difficult and dangerous undertaking by the learned Brother Henrieus Secundus, once known in the world as a high dignitary at the Church, - a Bishop, no Less. He, like his sainted prototype - Jerome of Roycroft- occasionally indulges in manual labor but calls it relaxation, and, in one of such hours hammered out this font of type upon his anvil. Lo! this is the result thereof. And he's only a boy, yet, sixty two last birthday - four years ago. Most of the labor upon this book was performed by the Brothers in the solitude at their respective cells, betwen penances. We may as well state that we are not all privileged to stay here as long as we may chose, for, by a beneficent rule we are sent abroad whenever it appears that our fellow men in the world will be benefitted therby, except in the cases of such of the Brothers as being conscious of the great sins committed when the world, have earnestly pleaded for the privilege of ending their days in this blessed sanctuary, in peace and rest. which permission has ever been graciously accorded. It is not given to all to be victorious, whether the battle be that of life ot that of Santiago. We may not all hope to be Schleys, nor yet Sampsons. Yet can we each do that which is within our power for the general good. There can be but one leader, and many followers who fight in the ranks; but the unknown and unsung Men Behind The Guns are none the less worthy their full need of praise for it is, after the final word, they who really win the fight. And now, it is the earnest prayer of The Grey Brothers of Le Trap that you will pay hed unto the words herein contained; that you will be richly benefitted thereby; and going forth, though empty may be your wallet, yet, with your loins freshly girded and the new "thought" hold firmly, you will hustle - that your own, may come to you, as it surely will. Petranius The Book is Dedicated to "The Man who has found his Work", no matter where he may be. There is one passage on the Work and Earnestness, that ends with: And now may the peace of a full and fearless understanding with self concerning what work you will do and how, come to and abide you to the end. Benedicite. [Lit.Verb as delivered to the Brothers of the Order, by Paulus, their Prior, on the XXVIII th day of April, MCMII and as telepathed the world over, from the Scriptarium, by the Brother Eusebius. Other Brothers include: Abiathar, Carmela, Platonicus, Salathiel, Euphuisticus, Carbettina, Claudius, Tomasa,Versiculus, Duncan, Amicus. Book condition is as shown.
