Description
Circa 1820 (Edo) Imari Nishikide Deep Fuka Bachi Donburi. 11” x 4 3/8” H. This real old Imari bowl is most extraordinary. It is magnificently painted with the most amazing detail, meticulous care, and traditional palette. The bowl has gold highlighting on both the interior and exterior with only slight wear on the rim. The interior design is fabulous and consists of nicely-detailed cobalt blue, orange, green, light purple, yellow, and peach figures, florals, etc. The top of the bowl has a home among colorful trees in a lake with mountains in the background. There are colorful geometric designs filled with flowers and vines and scores of flowers with four large fish swimming among the flowers. A similar geometric pattern is found on the left side of the plate with a large colorful reserve of flowers and butterflies on the bottom of the plate. These are outlined in green colorful geometric patterns. The inner rim is a beautiful continuous pattern of cobalt blue flowers and 4 cartouches containing gorgeous flower patterns. The same pattern is repeated on the outer rim. The outside of this magnificent bowl has 3 colorful, highly-stylized flower arrangements along with 3 colorful butterflies. This bowl with a double bottom is an exceptional example of Japanese Imari artistry and aesthetics. The foot rim exterior is also decorated in cobalt blue. This bowl is in pristine condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or restorations. There is some gold loss to the rim as would be expected for an item that is 180 years old. There is no loss to either the interior or exterior paintings. Both the interior and exterior glaze is unblemished and shows no evidence of wear. The polychrome enamels are all intact. It appears to have almost never been used. This is a gorgeous piece of old Japanese Imari porcelain that has been the center of my collection for the past 30 years.
