The difference is very significate to the astute collector. It happens after a couple of centuries have past. The quality of craft and psychology of the carvers was very different in the ancient world. Even a simple mask like this has such fine carving with incredible attention to detail. Material is different too. This appears to be a very hard wood. Patina is smooth almost shiny. Perhaps from centuries of handling. The mask come from a small village nestled in the Himalayan Range known as Routi. In the Himalayan mountains people practice many ancient animist religions related to Bonpo Shamanism of Tibet. Each valley is still quite isolate and can be accessed only by long journeys over small trails. Hense the spiritual or religious beliefs are quite varied an individual. There are no specific details on how this mask was used other then it was a local Deity of some significants. I found this mask at Ram’s Antiques in Kathmandu, Nepal. The age was told to be over 200 years. It is obviously from a different era. Ram told me that some villagers brought it in to him. Ram is adept at finding these rare treasures. He always has very rare things I’ve never seen elsewhere. Size measures 9 inches top to bottom 8.25 ear to ear and debth is about 5 inchesThat about sums it up. This is an extraordinary Museum Piece. It often takes me years to find a mask of this quality. It is one of the oldest I’ve ever had and one of the best. Happy Bidding.
