DESCRIPTION Here we have this Rare & Important very Early Antique Wedgwood Black Basalt Bust of Mercury. We can confirm that this piece will date from 1760 - 1840 and is an early example of the Wedgwood factory. The bust is large 18" in height and in excellent condition with no evidence of any damage or repair. The bust has wonderful patination and this is one of the very nicest poses that Wedgwood cast the determination on his face is remarkable. a Roman god of commerce, eloquence, travel and cunning who serves as messenger to the other gods. Mercury was the messenger with wings on his helmet. This Library bust is both marked Wedgwood on the bust & socle and also inscribed Mercury on the bust. As you can see the inscription and mark are done with individual letter stamps which was the earliest method that Wedgwood used as opposed to the full name on one stamp which they used much later on.
