Sell more with every listing. Get Vendio Gallery today! Once in a very great while I come by an Antique of the absolute finest quality and workmanship. This 1908 Reliquary/Monstrance is just such a find.. I purchased this from a dealer in high end Antiques and unfortunately do not know its provenance other then it was a present given to the Reverend Marlin Lany(?) by the Misses Susan and Mary (can’t read) Christmas 1908. This is written in script on the base of the reliquary. The reliquary is solid 800 silver throughout with a gold wash and is festooned with stones such as Red and Green Garnets (possibly Emeralds but am not sure) Turquoise and Pearls. At the Base all of the Saints are hand enameled and the silver masterwork is beyond amazing. The detail of the Neo Gothic designs is the best obtainable in the marketplace. The Monstrance / Reliquary stands a large approx 32" high and is approx 11" wide. It is a magnificent work of Religious Art. It has a few condition issues which I made sure to picture as best I could. There is one small figure missing and there are several stones which also are missing and one small design piece on the base. Please look over my 16 photos carefully and please e mail me with any questions you might have.I paid dearly for this reliquary but have seen much lesser examples bring more at auction then I paid for this Masterwork and the other reliquary's were not made in Silver nor did they have the ornamentation and jeweled and enameled Saints. In fact I've listed below a neo gothic 22" brass example made in Poland AND not even an Antique that is selling for $17,600.00 (see below) This Monstrance no doubt is about the Best you will be able to find. The marks on the base show the 800 silver and there is also a touch mark or hallmark that I know nothing about.I am sure an e bay member will help with its ID or Makers name. I try to offer the e bay community the Best and most unusual Antiques I'm able to find in the marketplace and purchase. This Reliquary ranks up there with the best of all my Antiques. I hope it goes to a proper Collector or Religious body Church or Priest. It is just that Fine of a reliquary to hold its own in anyones collection or Museum or House of Worship. If item does not sell by SUMMERS END it will be going into Christies NY where their relics appraiser offered a 25 to 30 thousand estimate..That auction will take place in approx 5 months and I plan on giving it to Christies if it does not sell ON E BAY BY SUMMERS END I would also additionally like to thank a knowledgeable Ebay member director4mau  for his insight below on the proper terminology of this item as being a monstrance and not reliquary....A monstrance is the vessel used in the Roman Catholic, Old Catholic, and Anglican Churches to display the consecrated Eucharistic Host, during Eucharistic adoration or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The word monstrance comes from the Latin word monstrare, meaning "to show", and is cognate with the English word demonstrate, meaning "to show clearly". In Latin, the monstrance is known as an ostensorium (from ostendere "to show"), and in England it is called a monstre/monstral.In the service of Benediction, the priest blesses the people with the Eucharist displayed in themonstrance. This blessing differs from the priest's blessing, as it is seen to be the blessing of Christ, rather than that of the individual priest. The exposition of the monstrance during Benediction is traditionally accompanied by chanting or singing of the hymn Tantum Ergo. The monstrance is usually very elaborate in design, with the preferred form being a sunburst on a stand, usually topped by a cross. (The sunburst is post-medieval.Medieval monstrances usually take the form of a crystal cylinder in a golden stand or a crystal window in a flat-faced golden construction that can stand on its base.) It is most often made of gold or other precious metals, and decorated with intricate sculpture work or other highly detailed designs. The monstrance is often made by hand by local or regional artists. In the center of the sunburst, the monstrance normally has a small round glass the size of a Host, through which the Blessed Sacrament can be seen. Behind this glass is a round container made of glass and gilded metal, called a luna, which holds the Host securely in place. When not in the monstrance, the Host in its luna is placed in a special standing container, called a standing pyx,in the Tabernacle. Before the current design, earlier "little shrines"of various shapes and sizes were used in different churches.Whenever the monstrance contains the Host, the priest will not touch it with his bare hands, but instead out of respect holds it with a humeral veil, a wide band of cloth that covers his shoulders (humera) and has pleats on the inside in which he places his hands.
