Description
Pre-Columbian GREEN STONE MEXCALA FIGURINE Ca. Pre-Columbian GREEN STONE MEXCALA FIGURINE Ca. DESCRIPTION Mexcala or Mezcala artifacts come from the "Guerrero" area of Mexico, which is near the central west coast. These figurines have a strong resemblance with the statues of "Easter Island". The workmanship is crude at best and the tool marks are very apparent. Most of these figurine look similar, hence we have seen a multitude of these idols over the years. This one is in the seated position, with hands at the knees and facing forward. It's expression is neutral and it lacks any type of clothing or jewelry . The idols never seam to have a particular gender or any type of hair. This one is of a green stone possibly Jadeite or Serpentine, it's 4.850" tall by 2.375" deep and 1.625" wide. The idol doesn't show any breaks or repairs. The Mexcala culture flourished in Late Pre-Classic times circa 300-100 BC. A couple of great web sites you should visit are " Pre Columbian Jade" and "Kerr portfolio", you can spend hours there and see some of the worlds best Pre Columbian Art. This item came from a private collector in the San Francisco area, who started his collection in the late 40's. He was in to Pre-Columbian art and African stone art. John Orbisen passed on a few years ago, and his family asked me to find new collectors that would appreciate these treasures as much as he did. I have featured some of the items in the last photo.
