Description
View Sellers Shop | Contact Seller These are a pair of 19th C French needlepoints. They consist of the canvas mesh for a salon settee back and seat, with a hand stitched needlepoint design completed. The design is of scrolls forming a shaped frame, intertwined with flowers. There are further groups of flowers, and the large bouquet in the centre of one and a pastoral central motif of a gentleman and lady, in the other. The central motifs are worked in petit point - tiny stitches.  The canvas has been partially completed - the only thing remaining to finish is the background colour. It was the way the French would decorate their interiors - they would decide on a colour scheme and then the backgound colour for the wool would be dyed along with all the other textiles at the same time, in order that they all toned in the room.  The design has a very 'Belle Epoche' look about it. The flowers running through the design are the same, but smaller scale in places. I have put a detailed photo side by side below so you can see the same design flow. There are no arm rest pieces unfortunately. These pieces are in very good condition, no stains, holes or damage, they have clearly been kept in a drawer. The colours are as you see. The dimensions are:  Piece 1. Settee Seat Back with pastoral scene of a lady and her beau - worked area outer edge to outer edge: 17  1/2" (44 cm)  by 47" (120 cm) wide The centrepiece is 9" by 10" ( 23 x 25 cm) Piece 2. Settee Seat with floral bouquet petit point centrepiece. The worked area is:  20" (51 cm) wide by 57" (145 cm) high. The centrepiece is 16" by 8" (40 x 20 cm) There is a further minimum of 6" ( 15cm ) of tapestry mesh all the way round to extend the pieces.  These could be used for their original purpose if you have something needing re-upholstering, or as a tapestry panel for hanging, or perhaps made into two large wide bolster type cushions for a drawing room? With all textiles of any age, be it vintage, antique, or hand crafted, please be aware that they are rarely completely perfect and I do occasionally have customers who expect that! If you are concerned or have any doubts please email and I will do my best to respond as clearly as possible so that you can be sure whether it is suitable for the project you have in mind.
