A. Cook's American Letter File - Chicago - Pat'd. Dec 10, 1872" I stands 23 1/2" tall (17" + the legs) x 30 1/2" wide x 10" deep. Each side has an S-shape roll to expose the 10- slot letter storage. Each slot is 3 5/8" wide x just under 3" tall. The front five slots taper from 8"- 10" and the back 9" - 11". The quality and condition are extremely good. The front has a nice recessed Gothic (?) details. I'd guess it to have been refinished many years ago and it has a wonderful subtle finish. The rolls work fine. It's in extremelt good condition with little or no damage/wear. I see no scratches or irregularity to the finish. Next to the plate are a couple of (cathairs ?, not scratches) The back is nice as well as are all the legs. The white spots seen on the inside have easily wiped off.  *** Great early office / business organizer. I'd say it's more so for letters and billheads as oposed to envelopes which were usually shorter than the slots. *** A museum piece? *** The practical place for this is on top of a cabinet or desk, yet the legs suggest the floor.
