Description
Height is 30.5 inches. Material: wood, cotton fabric, sacrificial liquids. Patina is encrusted. Hands are in a boxer's stance. Even the genitals are wrapped. Tanzanian tribal art is less researched and published than Western and Central art. There are still superb pieces coming out of rural areas. The best resource on Tanzanian art is Marc Felix's MWANA Hiti. Visona et al's ART IN AFRICA says, "{A Pare figure was} commissioned in order to enforce good behavior or punish misdeeds, for it was said to protect against theft. Its owners (or the specialist who advised them) encircled it with a cloth to bind spiritually powerful materials to its torso...the East African equivalent of the nkisi of the Congo people."**018808** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
