The three cultures of the Mesolithic period In France, South of Germany,Great Britain, Belgium,Holland, Spain, the mesolithic period is divided in three cultures : 1) Sauveterrian : characterized by an hypermicrolithism geometrized of the arrowheads (point, half-circle, trapezoid). 2) Castelnovian : characterized by micro tools : short scrapers, micro burins (gravers) and micro blades.3) Tardenoisian : with many scrapers, arrowheads with an irregular shape, then with a trapezoidal or notched form. Charasteristics of the Mesolithic lithic industry The Mesolithic period is marked by microlithism. Microlithiths are obtained by splitting flint blades to be used as arrowheads or as composit tool like a knife. In fact, the microlith represents a progress compared to the previous period because it is adapted perfectly to the use of the bow and the arrow. A good hunter could obtain and fix an arrowhead in a few seconds. The micoliths have various forms : triangle, half-circle, trapezoid, and bear different name according to their size : microlith : < 3 cm ; pygmé : < 2 cm ; hyperpygmé : < 1 cm .
