He probably lived and worked in Alexandria (Egypt). DescriptionThis is an extremely rare, old-coloured original copper engraving map by Ptolemy. It is among the earliest copper engravings and among the earliest maps ever printed. The beautiful old-colouring additionally increases the extraordinary scarcity value of this map. The map shows the Caucasus region: the area between Black Sea (to the upper left) and Caspian Sea (to the right) with the Caucasus Mountains and the regions south to it (today Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Eastern Turkey, Northern Iran). To the lower left you can see the Euphrates river and Lake Van (Thospitis Palus) in Eastern Turkey. The Rome edition of 1478 is the 3rd edition of Ptolemy’s geographic work, the 2nd including maps. The map offered here comes from an atlas fragment of this 1478 edition. A feature of this edition is the watermark (cardinal's hat) which can be seen at the final one of the pictures below. Conrad Sweynheym who introduced the first printing press to Italy in the 1460ies prepared the edition for several years. However, he died in 1477 before the publication. The project was taken up by Arnold Buckinck, originally from Cologne, who led the edition to completion on 10th October 1478. An outstanding feature of the maps of the 1478 Rome edition is the fine Roman letters used for the place names on the plates. In an apparently unique experiment, these letters were not engraved with a burin but punched into the printing plate using metal stamps or dies. A further unusual aspect is that the maps were printed on 2 sheets which later became joined in the middle. It is proved that Columbus owned an exemplar of the 1478 Rome Edition which served as one of his sources for preparing his upcoming expeditions. The maps of Ptolemy solidified the navigator's belief that the fastest route from Europe to the Indies was to sail directly west across the Atlantic, which as is known led to the discovery of America.  The engraved maps of the Rome edition are widely considered the most virtuosic and beautiful Ptolemaic plates before the publication of Mercator’s maps. The map offered here is doubtlessly among the most impressive and historically most valuable cartographic images of the region shown. Sie gehört zu den frühesten Kupferstichen und zu den frühesten Landkarten die je gedruckt wurden. Das schöne Altkolorit erhöht zusätzlich den außergewöhnlichen Seltenheitswert der Karte. Die Karte zeigt die Kaukasus-Region: das Gebiet zwischen Schwarzem Meer (oben links) und Kaspischem Meer (rechts) mit dem Kaukasus-Gebirge und dem Gebiet südlich davon (heute Armenien, Aserbaidschan, Georgien, östliche Türkei, nördlicher Iran). Unten links sieht man den Euphrat und den Vansee (Thospitis Palus) in der östlichen Türkei. Die Rom-Ausgabe von 1478 ist die dritte Ausgabe der ptolemäischen Geographie, die zweite mit Landkarten. Die hier angebotene Karte stammt aus einem Atlas-Fragment dieser Ausgabe. Ein Merkmal der Ausgabe ist das Wasserzeichen (Kardinalshut). Es ist auf dem letzten der unten gezeigten Bilder zu sehen. Conrad Sweynheym, der in den 1460er Jahren den Buchdruck in Italien eingeführt hatte, arbeitete mehrere Jahre an der Ausgabe, starb jedoch 1477 noch vor der Veröffentlichung. Das Projekt wurde vom aus Köln stammenden Drucker Arnold Buckinck übernommen, der das Werk schließlich am 10. Oktober 1478 veröffentlichte. Ein besonderes Merkmal der Karten der 1478er Ausgabe sind die feinen lateinischen Buchstaben, die für die geographischen Bezeichnungen verwendet wurden. In einem vermutlich einzigartigen Experiment wurden diese Buchstaben nicht mit einem Stichel in die Druckplatte geschnitten sondern mit einer Art Metallstempel gestanzt. Bemerkenswert ist außerdem, daß die Karten jeweils auf 2 Blätter gedruckt und später in der Mitte zusammengefügt wurden. Es ist nachgewiesen, daß Columbus ein Exemplar der 1478er Ausgabe besaß, an dem er sich unter anderem für seine bevorstehenden Fahrten orientierte. Die Karten von Ptolemäus festigten Columbus’ Glauben, daß die schnellste Route von Europa nach Indien westwärts durch den Atlantik gehe, was bekanntermaßen zur Entdeckung von Amerika führte. Die  Kupferstichkarten der römischen Ausgabe gelten als die virtuosesten und schönsten ptolemäischen Abbildungen vor Mercators Weltatlas von 1578.
