Rare and special, this work of art is proudly signed (see picture below of the signature ivory chop). This piece is the superlative expression of Japanese Art Nouveau, the most expressive, short lived and extremely rare period of the Meiji era for carved wood furniture. Its intricately carved natural iris motifs, a hallmark of this style, are rich, thick and deeply three dimensional. Circa 1852- 1912. h. 35" diameter 71".
