Description
Ethiopian handwritten Coptic manuscript Bible Type of Object: handwritten Coptic manuscript BibleEthnic Group: EthiopianCountry of Origin: EthiopiaMaterials: Wood, cloth and VellumApproximate Age: UnknownDimensions: Height is 6 inches.Width is 5 inches. 2 inches thick.Overall Condition: Old and Used. FairAdditional Information: 17 quires, ii + 170 folios. The codex has two covers of the traditional wood (visible on the inside between the paste downs). The grain of the wood is top to bottom. The boards and spine have been covered in tooled, red leather. The space between the paste downs on the back inside cover is nearly filled with woven material of white with black design. The quires are joined with a Coptic chain stitch and attached in a bridle attachment at four locations on the boards in the traditional manner. These attachments are especially visible at the gutter of the inside cover. This codex has a head and tail piece with corresponding stitches at the head and bottom of the spine. Someone has sewn yellow yarn into the folios at the location of illuminations. The general condition of the vellum is only slightly worn and dirty. The codex is a semi-deluxe copy of the Ethiopian Psalter with ten illuminations, at least 8 of which are late. The Ethiopian Psalter includes the Psalms of David, The Biblical Canticles, Song of Songs, The Praises of Mary and The Gate of Light. Dimensions: 160 mm x 125 mm x 58 mm.This was written in Ethiopic (Ge'ez), a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The leaves are vellum, usually calfskin, prepared by a lengthy exposure in lime, scraped with a rounded knife and finally rubbed smooth with pumice stone. The vellum is often scored with a pin, and they are written in black ink with titles and holy names often being in red. The subjects of these "Bibles" are always Christian, but actual content varies. It is difficult to date these pieces, which were made as early as the fourteenth century and continued through about 1850.
