Description
This is a rare, early E.Leitz sledge type microtome used for cutting thin specimen sections for slide preparation. Based on the construction it is possible that this was a prototype or one of a limited number produced as the frame is built up of brass sections rather than a casting. The design features a hand operated carriage which is moved along a dovetailed slide. The specimen is either waxed or clamped to one of the specimen holders (3) which in turn can be rotated, tilted in two axis and elevated to meet the blade. Fine adjustment of elevation and specimen thickness is provided by a large diameter micrometer disc divided into 100 divisions, each being 0.005 mm (5 micron). The micrometer disc is engraved " E.Leitz Wetzlar" The base is lead filled for additional weight and stability. There is no serial number although the three components of the blade holder are hand stamped "15" and the location of the two blade tilting screws (frozen) have been plugged and relocated slightly for better effect. Also the parts of the vise type specimen clamp have been hand stamped "16" for matching assembly which reinforce the opinion that this was a individually hand built piece and not a production unit. The few steel components show some pitting, evidently from rust at some point in time. The microtome moves freely and precisely. Base measures 7.6 inches in length. There is no knife with the piece although possibly a new blade could be obtained, modified and fitted if required. Alternatively www.micprotech.com could fabricate a (blunt) blade for display purposes only at a modest cost. Micprotech will be closed for the holiday between Dec 9 thru Dec 30. A very nice accessory for a Medical or Leitz microscope collection. The piece weighs approx 16 lbs and when packed will be around 20 lb, shipping by priority mail, insurance recommended. Sold as is
