From the late to post Vijayanagar period, this fine example of Southern Indian artisanship is striking. The art of Vijayanagar exhibits a high level of technical casting and artistic conviction, among the best-ever produced in South India. Shiva, the supreme Hindu God, creator of the Universe, is both the great ascetic and the master of fertility, the master of both poison and medicine. His right rear hand holds a damaru drum, whose sound denotes creation, his left rear hand he holds fire, signifying destruction. On his forehead is a vertical third eye, symbolizing his omniscient powers. Here Shiva is depicted in a specific pose of the Tandava dance (dance of the cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution). Please note the small crack in the back left corner of the base. Circa 18th Century. Dimensions: 18 ½” h. X 8” w. X 7” deep. Custom listed using TROCADERO's automated HTML and Picture Hosting tools.
