Description
Barrels 2 Special Antique Carved Ivory Thread Barrels English * Circa 1800 These antique cotton barrels are carved of real ivory with smooth sides and turned bands. They're quite unusual as the sides of each are wrapped with 4 rings of faceted steel beads. The tops unscrew from the barrels and the spools inside were to be wrapped with thread. Each has a hole in the side to feed the thread through. The ivory has shrunk over the centuries and the rings of beads are a little loose, though they seem to be secure. The condition is otherwise excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. They graced an English workbox of the early 19th century. Each measures 1 3/4" high and almost 1" in diameter. Some of the plain ivory barrels in this style are shown on p. 44 of Nerylla Taunton's Antique Needlework Tools and she also shows the style of workbox they would have been in. *This antique item is carved from African elephant ivory and was imported legally into the United States.
