They are collectible, symbols of a bygone era when sheep covered the New England countryside and woolen mills flourished. I found these in an old trunk in an empty barn on my farm. They belonged to a seamstress who lived here 100 years ago, and she kept them stored away with other evidence of her trade. These antique spools are sought after by crafts persons for a multitude of uses. They look fine as is in a rustic setting, or shine them up with a wax finish and use them as candle holders on a mantlepiece. I have seen them in a yarn shop peeking out of a basket of handspun wool, or they can be painted for a brighter, more current look in your decorating.
