Description
1st Century Roman Glass Amphora--5 inches tall--Intact with Amazing Iridescence. The level of multi-colored iridescence in this antiquity is extremely rare, usually seen only in museums or catalogues of well-known collections. Each angle produces a different experience of red, green, purple, blue and gold iridescence. The photos only begin to demonstrate the brilliance. This piece is from the collection of Wright Ludington, one of California's great art collector in the first half of the 20th century. This piece was probably purchased in Beirut or Damascus in the 1930's. Its body is heavily weathered from hundreds of years of burial. This is a unique opportunity to own a museum-quality antiquity with an excellent provenance. Please email me with any questions. Please see "Roman and Pre-Roman Glass in the Royal Ontario Museum" page 195 for similar shapes--also see "Glaser Der Antike" by Oppenlander, page 197.
