It dates from 1880-1890-Japanese Meiji period. The Meiji period (明治時代, Meiji-jidai), or Meiji era, denotes the 45-year reign of the Meiji Emperor, running, in the Gregorian calendar, from 23 October 1868 to 30 July 1912. During this time, Japan started its modernization and rose to world power status. This era name means "Enlightened Rule". The buffalo was made by Atsuyoshi saku - bearing his mark, made for the Maruki shachu sei.This is indeed a rare piece,not only because only 2 were made-a male and a female buffalo but because Atsuyoshi was known to make works for the other leading in that time company. Only one other bronze statue made by Atsuyoshi for the maruki company was sold in the last 10 years.It is a statue of a bronze camel-sold in Christies NY in 1998 for 5175$.
