WILHELM AND F. DONALD BURNS INVENTED THIS MACHINE, THEY CALL IT THE ELECTRONIC PSYCHOMETER, IN 1948 AND GOT IT PATENT IN 1950. B&W Associates of Michigan City, Indiana manufactured the B&W Lie Detector shown here, during the early 1950's. This model is identical to the instrument currently used by Cleve Baxter in his ongoing experiments to determine if plants emit Galvanic Skin Response (G.S.R.) activity. The only function of the Model 8AC is to measure G.S.R. activity. The recording of G.S.R. activity had not been integrated into these early polygraph instruments, thus the G.S.R. sensitivity dial on the left side of the instrument was manually controlled by the examiner to set sensitivity at a perceived norm. The centering dial on the right side of the instrument was used to bring the G.S.R. on the instrument into calibration. The meter counts units of G.S.R, and was very sensitive for its time. The Model 8AC also uses a automatic/manual switch which may be used if the examiner chooses to adjust the sensitivity manually prior to the first relevant question. The examiner had the option of using the automatic setting early in the test. The B&W Lie Detector was still used until just recently, and is still considered a reliable instrument for determining deception. This B & W Galvanometer was touted as a "Lie Detector." According to literature at the time, this type of instrument demonstrates nicely in the laboratory When in operation, a "Deception Indicated" (DI) reading is established when the pen moves above the 'CENTER' operational area on the meter. The 8AC utilizes only two fingerplates, and it is this theory that started the debate between measuring G.S.R. activity, verses the first studies in voice stress analysis. CENTERED   TRUTHFUL  POSSIBLE LIE OR DECEPTION   Galvanometers Galvanometers came into prominence during the early 1950's. Polygraph instruments of that era were "cardio-pneumo" polygraphs, with a pneumograph and a cardiograph. The effect of lying on the galvanic skin response had long been studied by the scientfic community. The Galvanometer became the new competition for the polygraph instrument. It was a one dimension instrument measuring only changes in the galvanic skin response in the test subject. It remained a serious "lie detector" instrument until galvanographs were incorported into polygraph instruments as a third recording module. This is a RARE COLLECTORS piece. This unit still works like a charm, (IN FACT) out of the last 5 of these units I have sold, This is the most rare and unusual working unit I have sold so far. The inside is in GREAT CONDITION and the outside is in fair condition.. Scuffs & Dust / normal ware for it's age. Of all I have sold, they have all had one crack or two in the case.
