Description
From a Nautical Estate, This 1940 Chelsea U.S. Navy MARK 1 Deck Clock is a rare and MAGNIFICENT Piece. Not the much more common Bakelite deck clock- It is the LARGE deck clock, with the Plated Brass SWING CASE which allows removal for setting or cleaning. Mechanism is covered with a plate incorporating a sliding panel opening for access to the regulator, second setting (for maintaining precise GMT navigational time) and time setting and winding with the key. Panel closes and prevents moisture from entering the case. Body can be removed from the backing plate by opening the front and sliding the clock up and off of it's mounting. Everything works smooothly. Clock retains almost all of it's original plating. It shows some signs of typical shipboard use, still looking very nice- It is undoubtedly one of the better of these WW2 brass Chelsea Mark 1's that will be found. These were generally mounted on large and serious Naval vessels, and most of the surviving specimens show much more wear and corrosion. Marked on the face 'Mark 1 Deck Clock...U.S. Navy...N (in a circle)...2773...1940'. Measures a touch under 8" across. Comes with the winding key. This clock is unbelievably weighty- It will weigh about 12-13 lbs, boxed for shipping. Though it is remarkably heavy and substantial, the stated shipping cost is correct anywhere in the U.S., due to the use of (very fast) USPS Priority Mail 'Fixed Rate' boxing. Might as well take advantage of that while it lasts. A MASSIVE BEAUTY, undoubtedly one of the best that will be found of this scarce model. Superb WW2 Chelsea quality, offered with a................Low Reserve.
