These maps were published by the Imperial Japanese Army in the 1930s just before World War II ( WWII ). The maps depict Taiwan in 10 sections and in incredible detail – often showing detail to the level of streets. This is the most detailed mapping of Taiwan to appear before World War II, with more than 50 items in the legend including police, courts, prisons, schools, hospitals, military bases, telegraph offices, power plants, volcanoes, mines, rice paddies, orchards, ranches, bamboo fields, waste lands, etc... All text in Japanese or Chinese. Maps include Taipei (1 shown above), Hsinchu (2), Taichung (3 shown above), Chia-Yi (4), Tainan (5 shown above), Kaohsiung (6 shown above), O-Lan-Bi (7), Su Ao (8), Hualien (9), Taitung (10).
