The photogravures, so masterfully rendered and exacting in detail, were produced from masterful photographs taken by various famous photographers such as A. von Graefe, G. von Estorff, Gertrud Fellner, Herbert Ponting, M. Huerlimann, F.M. Trautz and others. Each photograph is accompanied by a caption in French, German, Japanese and also English! The photo book at issue is concerned with making the essence of Japan accessible and understandable for Western cultures. The photogravures in the book picture every aspect of Japanese life imaginable – from everyday life scenes, religion and art to nature, architecture and traditions - that’s what you’re going to discover in this superb photo-book. Accompanied to this description, you´ll find a list of all motives and places featured in this unparalleled photo-book. .Unlike ordinary photographs, photogravures are produced in a photo-mechanical process during which copper printing plates are etched from photographic images. The combination of applying both a chemical and a mechanical process to an artwork results in images not only appealingly warm, but also unbelievably precise. This is due to the fact that a photogravure may look like a photograph, but whereas a plain photograph consists of a myriad of separate dots, the photogravure is a series of connected lines. Photogravure images have been described as having the subtlety of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph. Its exceptional attributes, first and foremost its high degree of stability and permanence, let artists decide to use this technique in spite of its lavishness with regard to time, effort and expense. During the 1920s photogravure gained significance as a means of reprinting photographs, and was promoted by such famous names as Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand. The fact that this technique basically ceased to exist after the artworks in this book were produced increases the value of this photo book and makes it a must-have for any dedicated collector!
