Description
New Launching 1929 CHRIS CRAFT EXPRESS COMMUTER MODEL“SEABORNE LIMOUSINE“    It comes mounted on a Mahogany wood stand which displays this model as a work of maritime art.   Presented  is the beautiful 1929 Chris Craft Express Commuter, our first model offering in this romantic yacht class of Express Commuter yachts developed at the turn of the 20th century.  This model replicates the Chris Craft Model 276, a mahogany 38 foot commuter with a cruising speed of 30 miles per hour. They were designed with sleeping accommodations for 4 and room to carry 20 passengers with a luxuriously appointed main salon, galley and full lavatory, bridge and rear and forward cockpits, and  they arrived at your berth fully equipped from bedding to the silverware.  We are pleased to add this superb plank on frame, excellently detailed model to our Chris Craft group. All the woodwork is put in place using the exact same materials and methods of construction as a real vessel.                                   Cockpit and bridge deck. Note scale wheel and instruments      HISTORY OF SEAGOING COMMUTERS: During the last half of the 19th century and first of the 20th, as wealthy industrialists and Wall street Financiers moved their families further afield from the metropolitan chaos of Manhattan, up the Hudson and around Long island Sound, they developed a waterborne luxury transportation system referred to as Commuter Yachts.  These Commuters were fast engine driven hulls with cabins, very Spartan to begin with but later the technology of propulsion, hydrodynamics and interior design improved so much that they became sophisticated passenger yachts.  For seven months a year, these seaborne limousines allowed their owners to board in their dressing gowns, dress and breakfast on their way to work, many enjoying the competition of seeing who would arrive first, especially as the results were recorded regularly at the New York Yacht Club. By the turn of the century, an enormous fleet of Commuters had established itself, not only in New York, but Boston, Detroit and Philadelphia.  A number of different manufacturers were involved in constructing these yachts, and in the latte 1920's, Chris Craft developed their Model 276 Express Commuter.
