Always originals - never reproductions!  This is:  Stieler's Atlas of Modern Geography - 254 Maps & Insets on 108 Sheets - Engraved On Copper - Tenth (Centenary) Edition - Completely Revised & Largely Redrawn Under The Direction of Professor Dr. H. Haack In Justus Perthes' Geogr. Institute - 1926-1928 - Gotha: Justus Perthes (all from the title page). This is a two volume set - Part First: Europe And Asia and Part Second: Africa - Australia - America - Index.  With Index Supplement. The Tenth Edition - the Centenary Edition - is considered by many to be the most comprehensive atlas issued in the 20th century with more than 320,000 names in its index.  The full color maps are exquisite and exceptionally detailed. Both volumes are complete - there are 108 - 2 page full color maps - as mentioned on the title page - and most of these maps have inset maps on one or both of the pages.  The 2 page maps are boldly numbered.  I personally checked every map page and found - remarkably - no tears and no writing on any of them.  They are absolutely beautiful maps. The index, in the second volume, as previously mentioned, is huge - running 316 pages in the volume and running pages 317 through 336 in the bound supplement (last photo above).This 2 volume set is a former library book belonging to the Frick Art Reference Library of New York.  It's stenciled markings are on both title pages, some pencil library markings are on both title pages and a red Withdrawn stamp is on the title page of volume 2.  There are library markings on the Preface page and on the lower outer binding.      Condition:  VERY GOOD overall.  Let me discuss the map and index pages first.  As previously mentioned, I personally checked every map in the two volumes - and they are in FINE to VERY FINE condition.  Lovely colors that are quite crisp and sharp.  Some light foxing of the pages - especially around the edges.  In these volumes, the maps were bound in - two double page maps together - so there is some occasional light rippling at the bound edges of some pages from the binding method.  The index pages were made from flat, unsmooth paper - and as such - are in VERY GOOD condition with foxing - all clean and very nice with no tears and no writing.  The index supplement is in VERY GOOD condition - but it was stored inside one of the volumes and as such, the unbound vertical edges of the pages have developed curls and folds and edge tears.  The supplement is foxed and has some edge dirt.  Now for the outer boards and outer spine.  The outer boards on both volumes - fronts and backs - show wear all the way around - edpecially at the edges with wear to the covering fabric.  The title on the first volume is still pretty sharp and clean - the title on the second volume is not as sharp.  The outer spine on the first volume is virtually gone - with what's left being quite fragile (pieces will fall off from handling).  And because of the first volume's outer spine's condition - the outer board is a bit loose.  The back board is much more secure but is a bit dirty and has quite a bit of rubbing on it.  There is some dirt on the page edges - right and bottom edges - of volume 1.  The outer spine on volume 2 is in better condition than volume 1 and you can still read the name of the book at the top of the outer spine (in red).  But, the outer spine is still quite worn and a bit fragile (not as fragile as volume 1).  Because of the nature of the fragility of the outer spines of both volumes, small pieces of the outer spine may fall off during handling and shipping.  The front board is a bit loose - and the back board is a bit dirty and has quite a bit of rubbing on it.  The page edges of volume 2 are much cleaner than those of volume 1.  All that said - a very nice set indeed.  Should you not understand something in this condition description - or require more information - please send me an email        U.
