So, what can I tell you? This came from the estate of a lady who lived past her 98th birthday who was quite the seamstress if the huge quantity of fabric was anything to go by. It is in excellent condition for a paperback book that is 100 years old and the paste board pattern is as well though it may be a few years younger. The book has instructions and diagrams for a number of different skirts, jackets, blouses, capes, coats including finished item and how to cut patterns "from draft". There's things like ".....proving up of hip line" and "Draft with large difference between Bust and Waist" and 9, 13 or 11 gore skirts plus "seven gore foundation for fancy skirts"....pretty much all Greek to me I'm afraid. I do think it's rather cheeky that Mr. Valentine is shown measuring a young lady but it does give you a photographic example of every measurement required. There are 84 pages that include instructions and diagrams on how to use the paste board pattern and drafting. The patterns include a two dart waist, French waist, plain shirtwaist, shirtwaist neckband or collar, stock collar, military collar, plain sleeve, two piece leg o'mutton sleeve, one piece leg o'mutton sleeve, shirtwaist or bishop sleeve, the skirt, inverted peat, full length of seven gore skirt with flare, skirt longer in back, skirt longer in front, 3 to 13 gore skirt, circular sirt with seams from waist to hip, skirt with circular flounce, nine gored princess skirt, circular skirt without seams from waist to hip, circular cape, single breasted tight fitting coat, semi fitting coat, princess dress, tight fitting coat with two seams to shoulder and shawl collar, coat sleeve, coat sleeve cuff, double breasted box coat, prince chap coat, fur coat, storm collar, Eton jacket, Eton jacket with circular ripple, blouse coat with circular ripple, belt with dip, corset coat and others. There are 57 diagrams not including the photos at the front. I do know there were a number of gentlemen making versions of this pasteboard pattern...I've compared the one made by Bleeks and the one shown in the Valentine's book and don't see any real difference....I suspect copyright laws were, oh, shall we say, a little casual in this field.I've seen a number of the pasteboard patterns over the past few months, they're all pretty much alike, but none of them had the book and instructions so it may be the number one star of this, pardon me if I say so, pretty amazing find.
