Description
On display for your consideration is a rare commemorative scarf in wonderful condition. This was found in my Grandmother's trunk, and since she was born in 1902, I can only guess she received it from her Mother. The material feels like linen, and I believe the shiny writing is done with silk thread. It measures 38" long with 4" of fringe and is 22" wide. The top part reflects VICTORY in blue. The bottom part reflects REWARD in blue. Displayed in white in between are the words below: INCORPORATED MAR. 4th 1837 THE WORLD'S TRIBUTE TO CHICAGO COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION 1892 - 3 Please note to save time and space, the scarf is not printed exactly as listed above. In addition, there are stars scattered throughout. The World's Columbian Exposition, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' landing in America, was actually held in 1893, a year later than had originally been planned. In addition to Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., and St.Louis all vied for the honor of housing the exposition. It was during this competition that the editor of the New York Sun, Charles A. Dana, dubbed Chicago "that windy city." Chicago's lobbyists finally won out and on April 25, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed the act that designated Chicago as the site of the exposition. It took three years of preparation and work to produce the exposition. Although the dedication ceremonies were held on October 21, 1892, the fairgrounds were not opened to the public until May 1, 1893.
