Description E  C  H  O   D  E  C  O art deco ~ art nouveau ~ ephemera ~ antiques and collectibles ~ arts & crafts movement ~ mid-century ~ kitsch ~ vintage cookbooks ~ old linens Antique Signed and Dated Embroidered Sampler 1880 Framed in Vintage Frame I am pleased to offer this wonderful antique sampler with embroidered red violets and leaves, dated 1880 and signed with the initials E L. This appears to be done on hand woven fabric that has a short 1/2'' fringe. It is mounted on a dark mat board (or some sort of colored backing- I have not taken this apart to see what's up inside, preferring to leave that to the next owner. The piece has a variety of techniques including cross-stitch, drawn work and a nice feather chain stitch. The colors are appropriately somber with the pinks and reds providing a nice POP factor. The date an the initials are found on the top edge. I see a few flaws, one area of the woven fabric seems worn or perhaps moths got to it before it was placed under glass. There is also a place in the drawn work where a few stitches are missing. Maybe this was once a pillow, saved by ancestors and placed under the glass to preserve it.I think the preservation was done long ago. The frame is vintage, gothic style which would place the frame around the same time as the date. It is pressed carved and the mitres are not the best. There are a few places on the frame where the wood is damaged but I still think this is a beautiful antique frame. It was once gold leafed I think as there is a slight gold tone remaining. All in all this 18-1/2'' square piece is perfect for a vintage Victorian interior. Especially if you love violets!
