Description
1862 Confederate States Bible Society New Testament First Edition Title: New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Publisher: Confederate States Bible Society, Augusta Georgia   Year: 1862   Condition: Pages intact, text appears complete.  Most pages have antique pencilled notes evidently from family members of the original owner.  There is also a family history on multiple pages (endpapers).    Inscriptions: Family history mentions Isaac A. Cox, Olaf Cox, Sarah A. Cox, Sarah Williams, Ed Williams, Jennie Cox, Elizabeth Mc___ (who married Isaac Cox in 1885).    Binding: Rebound in full-leather period style binding with raised bands on spine.  (The original publication, however, was done in paper covers.)   Description: Originally bound only in wraps, this Bible was the result of the formation and meeting of the Confederate States' Bible Society after a blockade keeping all Northern supplies from the Confederacy during the Civil War also diminished the supply of New Testaments.  Recognizing the importance of the Bible in their country--particularly Testaments for soldiers--the Confederate States' Bible Society stated, "To devise a plan for giving this Book of books to the world, is the object of our meeting....Let us...give the New Testament at least to our soldiers...Let us declare our will and purpose to co-operate with the other associations of Christendom in the work of printing, publishing and circulating the sacred Scriptures without note or comment; and may God speed the holy work and hasten the day when the Bible shall be the creed of every people, the text-book of every statesman, the constitution of every nation, the joy and excellency of the earth."  The proceedings of the society can be found online.  The Testament is thought to have been printed from the plates of the Tennessee Bible Society, but this is the first and only publication with the Confederate States Bible Society's imprint on the title SHIPPING: FREE shipping and secure packaging for all 50 US States and Territories.
