John McDouall Stuart (Petermann’s map mis-spells his name), 1815-1866, was the most famous and accomplished of all Australia’s inland explorers. Wikipedia offers a long & detailed history of his accomplishments, which were remarkable by any measure. A civil engineer, he emigrated to Australia in 1838, worked as a public and then private surveyor. He led the second expedition to traverse Australia from South to North and the first to depart form South Australia. This map depicts his Fourth Expedition whose goal was to find the center of Australia. The map shows his route in great detail and the story of his expedition’s hardship can agin be found in Wikipedia. On April 22nd, they arrived at what they believed to be the center of the continent (Central Mount Stuart). They pressed on, but 800 km short of the north coast were forced to retrace the 2,400 km to Adelaide. A remarkable story in every respect and a great map to document it.
