Top of the box is beautifully decorated either in walnut or early fruit wood with an early Georgian wavy design. Box has a wonderful brass ring with a bronze, highly decorative plate mounted to the top of the box with a floral flower shell design. The top of the box does have a crack which goes all across from front to back, also visible from the front please see photos for clarification. There are small chips on the outside corners of this box as well as two pieces of trim missing from each side of the bottom, which are very small pieces of beveled trim. Box has a couple of small nicks where it closes and locks and still has the original key with a mother of pearl insert inside the keyhole. The bottom of the box has a couple of small cracks, and one of the round bronze ball feet is crooked. On the inside of the lid is a mirror, and some of the silvering is worn away, and the mirror and the fabric trim need to be glued back in. Despite all of these imperfections, this is truly a rare and unusual box. The inside of the lid has a wonderful beveled 1/2 round design border. Between the mirror and the inside of the box is a silk satin pillow, yellowed with white and blue border, which could be used as a pin cushion or working pad where you can lay your sewing tools. Under the pillow reveals a pair of coin silver embroidery scissors, monogrammed EBH in fancy script, a coin silver needle case and a coin silver awl. The needle case is hall marked with a rabbit's head, and another hall mark with three letters on the side that I can't make out with a diamond and an R. The top of the awl has pulled apart from the body. All three of these piece have a wonderful Georgian floral flower shell scrolling design. In the lift out tray is also an old silver thimble, and the original seam on the thimble is beginning to pull apart. There is also a fancy perfume bottle with a silver top and it's original stopper. All of these sewing notions are placed into a beautifully detailed dark blue velvet lift out tray which has been created and designed to accommodate the various pieces in tight fitting compartments. In the four corners of the lift out tray are four round compartments which have mirrors in the bottom. These are compartments for 3 (out of 4, one is missing) exquisitely carved mother of pearl thread holders, which were created with great skill and craftsmanship. Also contain within the tray is a beautiful decorative pin cushion, highlighted with silver sequins and embroidery. Under the tray is a compartment for your sewing diddies. The inside bottom of the box measures approx. 6 7/16" long by 4 5/16" wide by 2 1/8" deep. The box itself measures approx. 7 1/2" wide by 5 1/2" deep by approx. 3 3/4" tall in the center. Box is fresh out of a Philadelphia estate. Welcome to our auctions!
