Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Floral border. Colours gold, cream, silver, pink, light green, copper and magenta. Verses read 'Life is the time to serve the Lord,> The time t'insure the great reward,> And while the lamp holds out to burn> The vilest sinner may return> The living know that they must die> But all the dead forgotten lie> Their mem'ry and their senses gone> Alike unknowing and unknown> Life is the hour that God has given,> To scape from hell and fly to heav'n> The day of grace that mortals may> Secure the blessings of the day> There are no acts of pardon pass'd> In the cold grave to which ???> But darkness death and long despair> Reign in eternal silence there'. A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including flowers, a butterfly and grapes.. CONDITION: Generally Good. A few holes. The ground in the middle of the verse is worn. Some light staining in places. Some stitch losses around the border and to the motifs. Colours are mostly good and strong. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.
