Description
15-Inch Terrestial & Celestial Globes by Cary's I am selling a pair of George III period terrestrial and celestial globes by John and William Cary of London, each measuring 15 inches in diameter. These globes are among the most scarce of the Cary firm's creations due to their unusual size. The beautiful, accurately detailed maps of the earth and skies are set within fine mahogany inlaid tripod stands with a compass in the base. This pair is also unusual in that they are in excellent condition. There is commonly a significant difference between the dates of terrestrial and celestial pairings. Globe makers often made celestial models in advance, since the stars and constellations were considered established and unchanging. New lands were constantly being discovered around the world, and terrestrial models were almost always “made to order” to ensure accuracy. John and his brother William Cary collaborated to craft some of the finest globes ever created. Their expert design and craftsmanship soon allowed them to take command of the English globe-producing market. This distinguished pair represents an exceptionally rare find.A similar celestial globe is featured in Elly Dekker and Peter van der Krogt's Globes from the Western World. I have all the proper documentation and information for both globes. The terrestrial globe is inscribed “CARY'S New Terrestrial Globe, Drawn from the most recent GEOGRAPHICAL WORKS, Showing the whole of the New Discoveries with the TRACKS of the PRINCIPAL NAVIGATORS and every improvement in Geography to the present Time, LONDON; Published G. & J. Cary, St. James Street, January 4, 1839.” The celestial globe is inscribed within a rectangular label, “CARY'S NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE ON WHICH are carefully laid down, the whole of the STARS AND NEBULE, contained in the Catalogues of Wallaston, Herschel, Bole, Piazzi, Zach &c. calculated to the Year 1820, Made and Sold by J. & W. Cary No. 181 Strand London 1818.” Dimensions:21 ½” wide x 41" high References:Globes from the Western World, 1993, Elly Dekker and Peter van der Krogt
